How It Started
In July of last year, as I was just getting back to work after being a full-time mom for over two years, some travelers reached out to me through this website. They had read my article on Roman street art and, inspired by it, wanted me to guide them on a tour. I seized the opportunity: I deepened my knowledge of Roman street art, created an itinerary, and launched the tour. Even today, you can find and book it through platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator.
Your Guide
Your guide for this tour is a local woman, 100% contemporary Roman, born and raised in the outskirts of Rome. Lisa is a licensed tour leader who has been sharing the treasures of Rome with enthusiastic travelers for eight years. Her connection to street art dates back to the late 1990s, when she was part of a group of friends passionate about hip-hop, writing, and painting. It was during those years that subcultures rapidly spread and flourished in Rome and across Italy, though it wasn’t until the first decade of the 21st century that street art fully matured.

The Locations
Rome is a metropolis of around 4 million people. Many buildings in its peripheral areas boast stunning murals. The areas I chose for this tour are three adjacent neighborhoods that feature some of the city’s most spectacular walls.
For the sake of completeness and to offer you compelling insights from multiple perspectives, I selected locations where street art is deeply connected to contemporary history. Over the three hours of the tour, you’ll find that historical and cultural information seamlessly intertwines with the visual experience.
- Ostiense
Since the late 19th century, Ostiense has been the city’s industrial hub, hosting large structures like the gas storage plant, power plant, river port, and general warehouses—all aimed at modernizing Rome to the level of other European capitals. Within a few decades, however, the Fascist regime redirected industrialization efforts to other suburban areas, leaving Ostiense behind. Over time, the neighborhood became the perfect canvas for large-scale murals, many of which emerged during the Outdoor Street Art Festivals. - Garbatella
Adjacent to Ostiense, Garbatella dates back to the 1920s. The government designed this neighborhood to provide housing for the thousands of workers employed in Ostiense. Garbatella is a unique example of aesthetically pleasing public housing architecture in Rome and Italy. The architectural style born here is known as Barocchetto Romano. While exploring Garbatella’s murals—which carry strong social and political messages—we’ll finally make our way to Tor Marancia. - Tor Marancia
Home to the famous Condominium Museum, Tor Marancia boasts 21 large murals on a single housing block. This is the most incredible stop on the itinerary and the most successful initiative for developing street art in Rome’s suburbs. Here, I’ll share the stories and ideas behind each mural and the history of this suburban neighborhood.

Good to Know
The tour is designed as a walking tour, covering a flat, circular route of about 4.5 kilometers. For those who prefer not to walk too much, or during bad weather (rain or extreme heat in the summer months), we can navigate the neighborhoods by car, stopping at all the mural locations and following the same itinerary as the walking tour.
